Above the Barre wins at dance competition

GURNEE – Gurnee Park District’s competitive dance team Above the Barre took home numerous titles at Wilmette Park District Center for the Arts dance department’s sixth annual dance competition held Feb. 23 and 24.

Above the Barre’s Senior and Junior teams placed in the jazz, lyrical and contemporary categories.

The Senior Team (Josephine Byers, Alive Jiang and Emma Kunz) received platinum merits for their Rise Up performance. Platinum is equivalent to first place.

Other platinum winners included Alice Jiang and Mollie Gibbons for their Lyrical duet piece, “Friends.”

The Senior Team (Emily Cretors, Ella Doig, Mollie Gibbons, Megan Kampf, Ariana Reimer and Cheska San Pedro) achieved high gold (the equivalent of second place) for their contemporary performance and gold for jazz.

The Junior Team (Olivia Brunson, Cara Deney, Olivia Kunz, Janae Vaughn and Anna Veronie) achieved gold in jazz and earned second place in their category for their lyrical performance.

A number of duet and solo performances also placed.

In duet, Alice Jiang and Mollie Gibbons took platinum in Lyrical, and Olivia Kunz and Emma Kunz placed second overall and achieved high gold in Lyrical.

In solo, Janae Vaughn place second overall and took high gold in Jazz, Ariana Reimer took high gold in Lyrical, and Lily Burch received gold in Open.

The next competition will take place in April at I Love Dance in Mundelein.
