Elder abuse training to take place in Waukegan

WAUKEGAN – The office of Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim will host Detecting and Responding to Elder Abuse on Feb. 22 at the Genesee Theater in Waukegan.

Nationally renowned elder abuse expert Paul Greenwood of California is the keynote speaker. Greenwood has been head of the Elder Abuse Prosecution Unit in San Diego, Calif., since 1996. He has been featured on CBS’s "Eye on America" and NBC’s "Nightly News."

Greenwood will draw upon his experience prosecuting more than 600 cases of elder and dependent abuse in his presentation as he addresses common misconceptions that often hinder the successful prosecution of elder abuse cases.

Also featured will be Mary O’Connor, a nurse with Vista Health who serves as continuing education coordinator for North Lake County EMS providers; neuropsychologist Leslie Guidotti Breting of Northshore University Health System, who will discuss cognition, capacity, competence and dementia in the elderly; and social worker Lisa Wilson, supervisor of Adult Protective Services at Catholic Charities of Lake County.

This workshop will be of interest to health care providers, social workers, first responders, nursing home administrators, attorneys and anyone concerned about the welfare of society’s eldest members.

Cost of attendance is $15, which includes a box lunch. The program will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. Attorneys can receive 2.5 CLEs.
